Working Smarter through Tough Times

We have resources available to us that we don't see.

In lean economic times, it makes sense to account for the various flows of information and resources that travel through an organization. Mapping these flows enables us to take a birds eye view and see visually things that otherwise would be invisible. Especially in difficult economic times, working smarter means understanding what you are working with.

How to get the most out of your geek.

Technology is great until it doesn't work. And because most folks who use technology haven't had the stomach to look under the hood, when things stop working it requires the assistance of someone who knows their way around a computer.

Enter the geek.

Technological cries for help can range in intensity from, 'hey, when you get a chance can you take a look at this?', to 'holy shit, my face is melting!'. And the truth is that when technology goes wrong, because it's function is so central to the process of work and getting things done, it can seem like your face is melting.

Toothbrushes and Exercise...

I am certain that there is a mechanism through which the things we think about doing become who we are.

That said, as a Technologist, clients are surprised when I tell them that Computer Science was never something I studied in college, and even more surprised when I tell them the truth about my studies.

The truth is that I majored in Toothbrushes.

It's actually known better as Industrial Design. I never officially took the 'Toothbrush' class, but the point is that there are sometimes when the truth can be misleading.

On the Death of the Non-Profit

There is a context in which the concept of not for profit organizations came to exist, and that context is very different from the one that exists today. Not for Profits, in my reading, first came into existence in America when the boys came back from WWII and wanted their jobs back. All the women who had entered the workforce in the interest of serving their country (and maybe their sense of independence and pocket books a little), well...their husbands, brothers, boyfriends, uncles and fathers came back. And on arriving back, they kind of wanted things to be like they left them.

Organizational Ecosystems

I want to make this really simple for folks. Because it is a concept that is actually really simple, and because understanding it can make a huge difference with respect to how you view your organization, and how much agency you feel over generating resources for your organization.
